Content Overview

The EWPA practical assessment involves the completion of key tasks based on realistic work scenarios. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:

  • Interpret drawings and specifications accurately
    Plan, organise, and carry out EWI installation to industry standards
  • Install base beads and insulation boards around features such as:
    • Gas flues
    • Windows (1200mm x 1200mm)
    • Roofline enclosures
    • External pipework (15mm)
  • Apply mesh-reinforced basecoat and textured finish render
  • Ensure correct installation below DPC level
  • Carry out safe working practices, material preparation, and clean-down
  • Work within defined tolerances and to manufacturer specifications

The assessment takes place over 3 days (maximum 12 hours) and is conducted under controlled conditions with one assessor per four candidates.

 

Entry Requirements

This assessment route is for experienced workers only. Learners must:

  • Be currently working or have recent experience in the external wall insulation sector
  • Be able to demonstrate their competence through practical tasks without the need for training
  • Supply evidence of previous work, including photographs, references, or employer confirmation where required
  • Be physically capable of completing the practical assessment activities
  • Provide their own hand tools for use during the assessmentNo formal qualifications are required prior to entry, but this route is not suitable for new entrants to the industry.

 

Certification

On successful completion of the practical assessment and confirmation of competence, learners will be awarded the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Insulation and Building Treatments (Construction) – External Wall Insulation: Boarder and Finisher. This qualification is nationally recognised and demonstrates that the learner meets the industry standard for EWI installation. It supports access to skilled worker CSCS cards and future progression within the construction and retrofit sectors.
